Sunnywood Halt: Fifteen months after closure and over two years after electric services ceased this message was still displayed on the shelter at Sunnywood Halt in July of 1953. The wooden halt had opened in 1905, in conjunction with a new steam railmotor service, and so its working life was only 47 years.

Sunnywood Halt: Just over one year after closure of the Holcombe Brook branch to passengers a RCTS railtour passes Sunnywood Halt (SD 785125) on its way back to Bury behind L&YR Radial 2-4-2T 50855, renumbered but still in LMS livery. The Six Bells Junction website says this was the Manchester & District Railtour and the train engine was another Radial tank 50644 but 50855 banked the train up this branch and led it down again. Tottington's mills can be seen above the train, the large building on the right being next to the station.

Sunnywood Halt: Notice alongside a boarded crossing, probably at Sunnywood Halt, on the Holcombe Brook branch stating in no uncertain terms: L&Y RAILWAY COMPANY. PERSONS using this crossing are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN to touch the RAILS provided for supplying ELECTRIC CURRENT to the trains and anyone TRESPASSING in this manner does so ENTIRELY AT OWN RISK. I presume there were a few of these signs along the length of the branch, and perhaps the Manchester to Bury line too, and wonder if any have survived.

Interlaken West: View at Interlaken West on a summer evening in 1966. At the pier is MV Oberhofen, a vessel operated at that time by the BLS on Lake Thun on local services around Interlaken. The Oberhofen was rather smaller than other BLS vessels that would cruise the full length of the lake, and I believe she is still in BLS operation today, albeit now only on private charters. The BLS Ce 4/6 electric locomotive in the station will certainly not be in regular service now, and it would already have been more than forty years old when the picture was taken. Two examples have however been preserved, and at least one can be seen occasionally on specials. Dominating the background are the Monch and Jungfrau mountains

Tyne Commission Quay: I found this booklet of travel instructions from a trip to Norway in 1967. Trains Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle Central and Tyne Commission Quay. Just change platforms at Newcastle, walk from the platform at TCQ through the transit shed and on to the ship. Now it is a double deck bus to the Quay, but this is totally inadequate with virtually no space for luggage. What a blessing was Dr. Beeching and not much appreciated. See image [[35716]]

Nantes: The characteristic French smoke deflectors, 4-8-2 wheel arrangement and complicated array of external 'works' on the locomotive tell us that we are across the Channel, in Nantes to be precise, in 1969. SNCF Grande P 241P30 prepares to leave with a 16-coach load on a Saturday express for Paris, which it will haul as far as Le Mans. Although grubby and due for withdrawal a month or two later, this fine locomotive completed the task with absolute aplomb.

Nantes: The real thing - at the head of a seventeen-coach express from Paris, an SNCF 241P 4-8-2 rolls into Nantes in the summer of 1969. A relief had arrived earlier behind a diesel, giving rise to more than a little concern on my part, as I had been hoping to see one of the 4-8-2s on express duty during their final summer of service. But all was well when 241P11 arrived spot on time with the main train.

Greenfaulds: The arrival of this train at Greenfaulds on 26 July 2006 put an end to some of the best cross-platform chat-up lines I have ever heard. The train is a Motherwell - Cumbernauld service and, while the two young men remained on the grass verge, by the time it had restarted its journey, the ladies had boarded a Falkirk Grahamston - Glasgow Queen Street train, which is currently approaching from the right. Garstang and Catterall: Double bridge. On the WCML, just north of the site of Garstang and Catterall, are two bridges. Each has an extra, single line, arch on the down side. These were for the Knott End line that ran parallel to the main line for nearly a mile before diverging to the west. This track also formed a long Down Goods loop. Irthlingborough: Most ironstone mines in the Midlands were opencast, but the line to the right from this junction - recently cleared to allow electric cable replacement - led to an underground mine opened as a quarry by the Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. in 1915, then converted to a mine in 1918. Ore was also supplied to the Scunthorpe works before closure in 1965. The mine had a 3 foot gauge electric railway, but was connected in 1938 to the Finedon quarries, which had a 2 foot gauge steam line. Bury Bolton Street: D9544 worked at BSC Corby from 1968 until it was scrapped in 1980. At the Class 14s @ 50 ELR Gala D9520 ran in the guise of its Corby stablemate on one trip and is seen here at Bury Bolton St, coupled to D9555, waiting to leave for Rawtenstall. D9520 adopted various identities of scrapped BSC locos during the gala.

Bury Bolton Street: The 2014 Class 14s at 50 Gala was intended to feature ten working examples of the class but, after arrival from the Nene Valley Railway, D9523 suffered a severe failure and became a static exhibit for the weekend. The maroon liveried 0-6-0DH is seen in the bay platform at Bolton Street. It is presently (2020) on the Wensleydale Railway.

Ramsbottom: The East Lancs Railway held a 3-day Class 14s @ 50 gala in July 2014. A highlight of the event was the return to service (after twenty years) of resident D9537, not least because it had been secretly painted in the experimental Desert Sand livery, complete with cast cabside crests, as carried by Western D1000 in 1961. The pristine loco is seen at Ramsbottom waiting to leave for Rawtenstall on 26 July.

Rawtenstall: The ten locos that gathered on the ELR for the Class 14s @ 50 gala sported a variety of liveries. D9526 from the West Somerset carried a Blue Circle roundel on one cab to reflect its service at APCM Westbury in the 1970s. The former D9524 worked at Grangemouth Refinery after withdrawal. Now based on Peak Rail it has a Rolls Royce engine in place of the Paxman original and sports large logo blue livery and the running number 14901. Both are seen running round at Rawtenstall on 26 July.

Ramsbottom: A once common sight that is very rare now. The signalman at Ramsbottom has released the pedestrian wicket gates and winds the wheel to open the level crossing to road traffic as a passenger train disappears towards Rawtenstall. During the early 1960s this box was open 24/7, apart from a few hours overnight Sunday to Monday, and the line was busy with freight, parcels and passenger trains.

In addition to a mixed selection of parcel vans a couple of passenger coaches were in the consist. With the slopes of Holcombe Moor in the background, D9537 is seen powering through Irwell Vale heading back to Bury on the last Parcels of the day with D9539 bringing up the rear. Gregson Lane: A4 no 60009 Union of South Africa heads east at Gregson Lane LC on 26 July with the Cumbrian Mountain Express from Crewe to Carlisle via the S&C. The system was taken over by Glasgow Corporation Tramways in 1923 and in 1925 No.17 was rebuilt as an enclosed single-decker and renumbered 1017. It continued in service until 1960, latterly as a training car. Discovered some years later in a garden at Cambuslang, it arrived at Summerlee in 1991 where a full restoration took place and 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of its re-entry into service. St Monans Salt Pans: The Newark Coal & Salt Company was established in 1771 to produce salt from the seawater off St Monans, Fife, using coal from a nearby mine to heat the water. A waggonway was used to move the coal to the saltpans and also connected to the harbour at Pittenweem, along the coast to the east. This ceased operation around 1794 and production stopped in the 1820s. Plans were announced in 2021 to restart production in the area. Looking east to Pittenweem along the site of the saltpans. The (now restored) windmill was used to pump seawater into the pans. Gartness Junction: Today tree growth and ground movements have made the site of Gartness Junction far less discernible than back in 1987 (see image [[1974]]) when the former F&CJR trackbed still saw occasional use by farm traffic. Some imagination is required. The Strathendrick and Aberfoyle line was to the left, F&CJR to the right - the hump in the middle of this view separating the trackbeds. The signal box was set back further, within the 'V' of the junction.

Boldon Colliery: Boldon Colliery may have been completely demolished and landscaped, but this fenced-off road bridge over the rail entrance survives by the skin of its teeth. Gartness: Immediately west of Gartness station was a level crossing. The site of the station is now a house and the last remains of the station platform and level crossing gates are gone. The line passed to the immediate right of the building. The public road is used as a part of the route of the West Highland Way.

Tynemouth: Tynemouth is a pleasant resort just a few miles away from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The station was built in 1882, and rebuilt in 2011. There is a nice restaurant and craft ale bar on the forecourt; but alas, my wife summoned me to a beach barbecue, where I ate chicken with sand. Notice the imminent alien landing in the foreground.

Gartness Junction: Gartness Junction from above. The junction formed a V which can be made out in the lower centre of this view. The course of the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway ran from bottom centre to top right (where Gartness station was located). The Strathendrick and Aberfoyle ran from bottom centre (along the left edge of the field in the centre of the view), crossed over the Endrick Water and continued towards the right hand of the new houses and on to Killearn and Dumgoyne stations (the hill of this name can be seen on the left).

Troon: It looks like the downside building at Troon had a narrow escape - the south curtain-wall is gone and there is evidence of fire-damage. In this July 2021 picture the new timber fence has replaced the wall.

Leyland: Less than a minute before the PA had announced that the next train at platform 4 would be the Northern service to Manchester Airport, a Swift Express Freight Class 321 EMU conversion appeared from under the road bridge with the driver sounding his horn to warn passengers who had strayed too close to the platform edge. The converted unit is 321334 and carries reference to Eversholt (the leasing company) and Wabtec who carried out the conversion. The unit had travelled north to Mossend the day before from Tilbury and Euston and this was the southbound run to Doncaster via Wembley.

All of the passenger cars and the two engine units were thrown from the tracks. One of the Renfe class S730^s middle carriages was thrown several metres through the air, landing upside down on the other side of a wall.
