St Albans Abbey
Gasometers, piles of refuse, a decrepit station, potholes in the road and cold drizzle greet passengers alighting from a shabby DMU at St Albans Abbey on 29th December 1978. If the post Christmas gloom was not enough, there was also the ongoing Winter of Discontent to reflect upon. 'Can things get any worse?' the downcast folk in the photo might be wondering. Many decades later, social historians have still to agree on an answer..
