Furka Base Tunnel

Grab shot of the Furka Base Tunnel (west end) car loading terminal from a passing Glacier Express service. The 15km tunnel, at an altitude of 4500', replaced the Furka Summit tunnel at 7100' and its opening in 1982 allowed year round operations on the line rather than summer only. The vehicle carrying shuttle trains operate a frequent service through the tunnel avoiding the steep climb and descent of the Furka Pass.
