Paddington: My first glimpse of an HST power car in the new 'Swallow' livery about to leave Paddington for Bristol TM in September 1987. The swallow emblem had replaced the old BR double arrow symbol, while the previous yellow lower section had been changed to white with a red stripe (as already used on the coaches). The original 'InterCity 125' branding had now become the more urgent 'INTERCITY'. Just a pity I had B&W film in my camera at the time, although David Pesterfield did manage to capture a colour version at Crigglestone Junction during that same month - see image [[25033]].

But the tracks stop under the bushes on the left. To the right, there is a car park, which included an isolated buffer stop at this time. Carnforth: The stored DRS lcomotives at Carnforth seem to be moved around the yard quite a bit - presumably to keep things from seizing up. 37261, 37612 and 37605 are seen here from the station platform, in front of four stored Class 20s, with the depot coaling tower and ash plant behind. Will there be any RHTT work for these locos this autumn? Postscript: Later that same day four more DRS Class 20s (20309/10/11/12) arrived from Carlisle for storage in the yard here.

Filisur: Swiss Fellsman? Rhaetian Railways operate the metre gauge network in south east Switzerland. It is mainly electric but they have some diesels and also preserved steam on their books. RhB electric 605 Silvretta, a mere 60 years old, has just run round the Davos portion of the Glacier Express at the junction at Filisur but is held briefly while RhB 108 Engiadana, a splendid looking 2-8-0 dating from 1906, departs for Chur with a well loaded special excursion. 108 and sister 107 were retained for snowplough duties long after 27 other class members were sold to Siam and Brazil.

These views from the rear of a descending Glacier Express service show the start of a rack section, where the train slows to walking pace until all coaches connect with the rack, and also the complicated set of points at the passing loop at Kipferwald.

Millbrook Proving Grounds: This power pack, one of four per train, is the crucial package in converting a D stock tube train into a class 230 DMU. It was used as a demonstration of power train packaging at a show for road vehicles. The engine is a 5-cylinder, 3.2-litre Ford Transit diesel, and is installed at an angle to the module to enable an oversized DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to be installed - the rail duty cycle being more demanding on pollution control than that for road vans. The module weighs a ton, and can be swapped out in five minutes - the only connections to the train are the mechanical mountings, fuel pipes, electrical hookup, and an exhaust pipe. The engine drives an alternator, whose output is rectified to 750V DC to drive the original traction motors. In case you're wondering about the rather vivid grass, you're right - it is plastic.

The space on the north side of the single track is where work commenced on doubling the line all the way to Edgware as part of the 1935 New Works scheme but which was held in abeyance at the start of World War Two and never fully completed after 1945. Highgate: LUL 1995 stock on northbound Northern Line train at Highgate, looking north, destined for High Barnet but curtailed at Finchley Central, on 14th September 2019. This station is part of the completed 1935 New Works scheme to convert the LNER (ex-GNR) Northern Heights Lines to Northern Line tube train operation, most of which was held in abeyance at the start of WWII and never completed after 1945. Tube trains were extended from Archway to a junction with the Northern Heights Lines at East Finchley on 3rd July 1939 but Highgate station on this section did not open until 19th January 1941 although it was used as an air raid shelter from October 1940. It is situated deep below the site of the original GNR Highgate station of 1867 which was reconstructed for tube trains to Alexandra Palace but, in the event, this never materialised and the high level station closed in 1954. Thus Highgate station today is only partly complete.

Mill Hill East: View from the west end of the single platform at Mill Hill East station, LUL Northern Line, towards the abandoned section to Edgware, on 14th September 2019. The line opened throughout from Seven Sisters Road (renamed Finsbury Park in 1869) to Edgware in 1867 with branches from Finchley (Church End) (now Finchley Central) to High Barnet opened in 1872 and from Highgate to Alexandra Palace in 1873. Under the 1935 New Works scheme, the Finchley to Edgware line was to be doubled with both Mill Hill East and Mill Hill (The Hale) receiving an extra platform, plus a brand new extension north of Edgware to Bushey Heath. Work began on these and in order to facilitate the doubling of the Finchley to Edgware line, passenger services were temporarily withdrawn in 1939. On 18th May 1941, tube trains were extended on one track only from newly renamed Finchley Central to Mill Hill East, principally to serve the barracks, but the rest of the scheme was cancelled after 1945 and trains never again ran between Mill Hill East and Edgware, though the line remained open for freight until 6th June 1964.

Penygarreg Halt: Penygarreg Halt has been created as the southern terminus of the heritage line from Llynclys. The halt is north of the village of Pant but the trackbed of the former Cambrian Railway line is currently blocked by a filled in overbrisge. The push-pull shuttle service that was operating on 14 September 2019 was using a Shark ballast plough brake van to control operations southwards, while an 0-4-0 Ruston diesel did the push-pull bit.

Mill Hill (The Hale): The site of Mill Hill (The Hale) station, looking towards Edgware, with some remnants of the platform visible in the weeds and undergrowth, on 14th September 2019, 80 years and 4 days after it closed. The closure was meant to be temporary to allow this ex-GNR line to be doubled and electrified for Northern Line tube trains but the scheme was held in abeyance during the war and never fully completed after 1945. Tube trains from Finchley Central started running on a single track as far as Mill Hill East, just one stop, on 18th May 1941 but the Mill Hill East to Edgware section never reopened to passengers. Freight trains over this section, however, continued to run until 6th June 1964.
