Irthlingborough

Most ironstone mines in the Midlands were opencast, but the line to the right from this junction - recently cleared to allow electric cable replacement - led to an underground mine opened as a quarry by the Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. in 1915, then converted to a mine in 1918. Ore was also supplied to the Scunthorpe works before closure in 1965. The mine had a 3 foot gauge electric railway, but was connected in 1938 to the Finedon quarries, which had a 2 foot gauge steam line. The line on the left is the LNWR from Peterborough to Northampton see image 44129.
