Little Benton South Signal Box

A North Sea fog hangs over the east coast main line to the north of Newcastle circa 1960, as A1 Pacific no 60137 Redgauntlet approaches the site of Little Benton sidings see image 30435 with a long down freight, just under a mile short of Benton Quarry Junction. Such conditions were not uncommon in the area and the locomotive is about to pass a fogman's lever, used for the remote placement of detonators in extreme conditions. The Pacific is listed as being officially withdrawn from 52D Tweedmouth shed at the end of October 1962.
