Little Benton South Signal Box

An EE Type 4 takes a freight north from Newcastle in the 1960s, near the site of Little Benton sidings. The train has recently crossed the bow-string girder bridge over the Coast Road in the background. Also in view is the eastern end of the WD&HO Wills cigarette factory, the main module of which still stands, having been converted into luxury flats after closure. Also of note alongside the down line in the foreground is a fogman's lever used for the remote placement of detonators, suggesting the train is approaching a distant signal see image 30435.
