Westoe
The NCB locomotive shed and workshops at Westoe, South Shields, with various electric locomotives present. The large Westoe complex, linking local coal mines with staithes on the River Tyne, was originally developed by the Harton Coal Company. It was finally abandoned following the closure of Westoe Colliery, the last operational deep mine on Tyneside, in 1993. The photograph is thought to have been taken circa 1959.
