Whitrope Tunnel

A3 Pacific no 60087 Blenheim blasts out of Whitrope Tunnel with the 12.00 Edinburgh-Carlisle on 16 April 1961. This train achieved some notoriety for being one of the heaviest loss-makers on BR Scottish Region, and was withdrawn on Mondays to Fridays in early 1962 - leaving a dreadful 4 hour gap between the 10.15 am and 2.43 pm departures from Waverley, which remained (extended to over five hours) to the very last Waverley Route timetable.
