Rainford Junction

142057 for Kirkby entering the single line section west of Rainford Junction station on 10 February 2010. For the scene as it was thirty years earlier see image 21273. Apart from the undergrowth, the most significant change has been the recent track replacement. At the time I said it was interesting, considering the traffic levels, that NR had used concrete sleepers when, for lines without heavy freight, steel sleepers were normally the order of the day. It was also interesting that every second or third sleeper had ready made holes to support a third rail and I speculated tht Merseyrail were considering extending from Kirkby to Wigan Wallgate! Well the third rail has not appeared yet but regular freight is now running from Knowsley Freight terminal near Kirkby!
