Euxton Junction

A First Trans-Pennine Express service for Manchester Airport leaves the WCML at Euxton Junction and heads to Manchester via Chorley and Bolton on 7 August 2009. The road in the foreground is the A49 former trunk road which passes under the WCML through a two part bridge. The older part (dating from the opening of the railway?) is known as Pack Saddle Bridge and is so narrow that traffic has to be controlled by traffic lights. It has also suffered from being struck on several occasions by road vehicles due to restrictions on height as well as width.
