Eastgate

View over Eastgate station (now a private house) in May 2006 looking back along the Weardale branch towards Bishop Auckland. The station, on what was a major mineral branch, lost its passenger service in 1953. The line was cut back from the original Wearhead terminus to the Eastgate Blue Circle cement works (behind camera) by 1968. This part of the line closed in 1993 but, further east, the privately operated Weardale Railway is active.
