Penton

The great Penton tomato rescue - 1967. The pickup freight from Kingmoor serving Langholm and Newcastleton via Riddings Junction, stands at Penton in August 1967. Penton signal box was due to close and the signalman is in the process of retrieving his tomato plants. The freight, hauled by an EE Type 1, contained an extra brake van for members of the Border Railway Society. This particular trip was due to be the last freight to Langholm but the service was reprieved a further twice. The guard is Jim Bee, a Carlisle man on what was a regular turn for him.
