A 15 tonne 25hp locomotive from the railway, with its wheels removed, was installed in the HMS Erebus to provide hot water and power. Another was fitted to HMS Terror. The Erebus and Terror, of the ill fated Franklin Expedition, left the Thames in 1845 to discover the North West passage.
