The bushes on the right mark the site of the now demolished ramp that once took down trains onto the former GNR's Alexandra Palace branch until the line closed to passengers in 1954 after almost becoming part of the LUL Northern Line. 1/13

28/03/2019
David Bosher

Alexandra Palace

London to Peterborough (Great Northern Railway)

Brand new 717007, from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, arriving at Alexandra Palace station, on 18th April 2019. This station opened with the line on 7th August 1850 as Barnet and was renamed New Barnet on 1st May 1884. 3/13

18/04/2019
David Bosher

Grange Park

Enfield Branch (Great Northern Railway)

717016, with a Great Northern service from Moorgate to Watton-at-Stone in Hertfordshire, departing from Grange Park station on 30th October 2019. Just north of here the original line to the 1871 terminus at Enfield, of which nothing now remains, went straight ahead while this train will leave the 1871 tracks and veer slightly right onto the tracks opened in 1910 with the first stage of the incorporation of the line into the Hertford North Loop from Enfield to Cuffley. 4/13

30/10/2019
David Bosher

Hornsey

London to Peterborough (Great Northern Railway)

717013 from Watton-at-Stone in Hertfordshire to Moorgate heading away from the camera as it departs from Hornsey station in north London, on 30th October 2019. This was one of the original GNR stations of 1850, irreparably damaged when rebuilt by BR in 1976 for the electrification of the London suburban services. This saw the platforms on the main line ECML tracks abolished, leaving only one side of both island platforms for local trains. The shoddy buildings date from the same time while the replacement ticket office, inconveniently sited on a bridge linking both sides of the line and which involves lots of steps (and badly lit at night too), resembles more a public convenience than a railway station. 5/13

30/10/2019
David Bosher

Bowes Park

Enfield Branch (Great Northern Railway)

717007 to Moorgate arriving at Bowes Park station, north London, on the cold and grey afternoon of 21st November 2019. 6/13

21/11/2019
David Bosher

Alexandra Palace

London to Peterborough (Great Northern Railway)

717011 with a stopping service from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City arriving at Alexandra Palace station (known as Wood Green until 1982), on 4th March 2020. Surprisingly so, given that May 2021 was the coldest, wettest and windiest May since 1967, especially in London. 9/13

11/05/2021
David Bosher

Hornsey

London to Peterborough (Great Northern Railway)

717007 on a Great Northern service from Moorgate to Stevenage via Hertford North heading away from the camera as it departs from Hornsey on 27th August 2021. This was one of the original stations on the GNR London Extension of 1850, but rebuilt in a slapdash shoddy style with no redeeming features whatsoever during the electrification of the GN London Suburban services which commenced on 8th November 1976. 10/13

27/08/2021
David Bosher

Essex Road

Great Northern and City Railway

717002, with a GN suburban service from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City, calling at Essex Road on the evening of 29th October 2021. This station began life as Essex Road with the Great Northern & City Railway in 1904 and was renamed Canonbury & Essex Road in 1922, but the original name was restored in 1948. This was, for years, a London Underground line treated as a short spur of the Northern Line where, on 28th February 1975, a crowded morning rush hour train of 1938 stock crashed into the short over-run tunnel at Moorgate, resulting tragically in much loss of life. LU trains ceased shortly after when the line was temporarily closed to enable it to be reconstructed for use by GN electric suburban trains which began with class 313 units (that lasted until 2019) on 8th November 1976. 11/13

29/10/2021
David Bosher

Essex Road

Great Northern and City Railway

717022, with a Great Northern suburban service to Moorgate, departing from Essex Road on Saturday, 13th November 2021. The station has a rather creepy atmosphere and few people, even in peak hours, seem to use it. 12/13

13/11/2021
David Bosher

Finsbury Park

London to Peterborough (Great Northern Railway)

717015, with an all stations Great Northern Suburban service from Moorgate to Welwyn Garden City calling at Finsbury Park station, on the damp murky morning of Sunday, 5th December 2021. 13/13

05/12/2021
David Bosher
