Camden: Fowler 3F no 47668 stands on Camden shed in October 1959. In the background, partially hidden by the locomotive's smokebox, is the old roundhouse built by the London & Birmingham Railway in 1846. Although only used to house locomotives until 1867, the roundhouse still survives and stands today as a well known arts and entertainment centre on Chalk Farm Road.

High Street Goods: This is the huge edifice that was once Glasgow High Street Goods Station, pictured in October 1984 with six months to go before the demolition teams arrived. Photographing the site was particularly unnerving for two reasons. Firstly, the cavernous structure was full of the ghosts of the hundreds of workers who'd toiled in the building since it was built in 1904. Discarded equipment, paperwork and signage to long closed rail destinations was lying everywhere. Secondly, there appeared to be much more physical presence about in the upper reaches of the building. Not a time to be caught deep in a derelict maze with valuable camera equipment. Either end of the building had a prominent clock at roof level. The station's time had run out one day in March 1982 at 11.15.

Weitra: Scene on the Waldviertelbahn in Lower Austria in October 1985, close to the then Czechoslovakian border, as 760mm gauge 0-8+4 no 399.03 (of  'Stutztender' construction on the Engerth principle) crosses the viaduct at Weitra with train 71445, the 10.12 freight from Gmuend to Gross Gerungs. In the event the train did not reach its destination as the loco failed at Langschlag. By this date the line was nominally dieselised (except for weekend passenger workings during the summer which reverted to steam as a tourist attraction) but a shortage of diesels on this and other Austrian State Railways n.g. lines meant that one freight diagram was often still steam worked.

Darlington Works: Built in 1863 by the Stockton and Darlington Railway, Darlington Locomotive Works, or North Road Shops as it was known locally, became the towns largest employer (peak of 3,815 in 1954). Following its eventual closure in 1966, the site lay derelict for some time but is now occupied by a number of retail outlets, including a large Morrisons Superstore. This view up North Road on 4 October 2008 shows the refurbished Darlington Works clock, now attached to the east wall of the Superstore and serving as a small memento of what once stood there.

Part of the central section was used after World War 2 by A H Peppercorn, last CME of the LNER, while more recently the NELPG has used the northern section for locomotives undergoing heavy maintenance and repair. The southern section was in the news recently as the works in which 60163 Tornado was built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. Photographed on 4 October 2008.

Preston (Ribble Branch): DP1 Deltic is to return to the National Railway Museum at Shildon for the Deltic 60th event on 24th October 2015 but prior to doing so made a final appearance at the RSR Diesel Gala running into the station at the head of a rake of MkI stock. The plume of exhaust at the rear of the train is the giveaway that of course it was being propelled but it made a fine sight.

Preston (Ribble Branch): The 2015 RSR Autumn Diesel Gala saw Class 14 D9537 visiting from the East Lancs Railway. It is seen here on a demonstration freight working with resident D9539. The Desert Sand livery is a head turner but would probably have been completely impractical in day to day service had it been adopted by the Western Region.

Slateford: A Virgin Voyager runs east through Slateford on 4 October 2015 as the 0850 Polmadie TMD - Edinburgh Waverley ECS working. The stock will form the Sunday morning 1051 Edinburgh Waverley - London Euston (via Carlisle and the WCML). The train has just passed the crossover which allows eastbound trains access to Slateford Junction see image [[4785]].

Ribble Steam Railway Workshops: What remains of 08628 sits outside the RSR workshops in October 2015 while the last few usable parts are removed. The fuel tank, seen here alongside the stripped shunter, had the appearance of a tombstone. Although dismantling had been a slow process See image [[40433]], looking at this loco it seemed that 08628 could not be around that much longer and by February 2016 it was in Andrew Goodman's yard near Sutton Coldfield in this stripped-down condition and later that year was cut up at EMR Kingsbury.

Dovehouses Bridge 161 [LC]: It is at least eighty years since a canal boat turned round in the winding hole at Dovehouses. The canal north of Tewitfield closed in 1942 and several points were culverted in the 1960s for the M6 Motorway build. Just beyond here the waterway turns west through Crooklands before striking northwards again towards Kendal.

2003Class 67 Trial on West Highland SleeperFollowing the success of the Class 67 trial to see if better acceleration could offset the 5 mph limit due to higher axle-weight ratio across structures, there now are driver-training and funding issues which must be discussed with SRA before ScotRail can make any commitment to these newer locos replacing Class 37s.
2003Railway bridge in Inverness damaged by excavator on truckThe railway bridge over Shore Road in Inverness was damaged and track slewed at 0600 on the 4th by an excavator on the back of a truck. 2012What future for railways after West Coast reversal? [BBC News]It sounded too good to be true, and perhaps we have now had confirmation it was. First Group appeared to have won the West Coast Main Line franchise by offering the government much more than any firm had paid before for a service. The deal would have seen the company pay back more than five times as much as Virgin paid for the previous deal. It was an offer then that came in the middle of a recession to a government in need of every penny. The fall-out from today now suggests it was as unrealistic as it was tempting.
2013Closed rail line to cause disruption [Lancashire Evening Post]Lancashire commuters face serious disruptions following rail chiefs’ plans to close part of a major North West line. Network Rail has announced that it is to electrify a section of the Manchester-Preston line. The track connecting Chorley to Preston is set to be closed for a minimum of six-weeks in the summer of 2014. The 101 metre long Chorley Tunnel will undergo major redevelopments which will see the track lowered and the tunnel re-structured in order to complete the electrifying process. Five other bridges in Chorley will be affected while the electrification work takes place . But the closure of the tunnel means a service will not be running from Chorley to Preston and Preston to Chorley.
2015Specialist track-laying work begins at Norton Bridge ahead of flyover [RTM]A new section of track and 11 new bridges are being built to create a flyover at Norton Bridge in a £250m Network Rail project to remove a major bottleneck on the West Coast Main Line. The work, which will deliver capacity to run more passengers and freight trains, will see 10km of track laid from the new siding created at Little Bridgeford.
2016Southern conductors offered £2,000 to end rail strikes [BBC News]The operator of the Southern rail network has offered conductors a lump sum of £2,000 in a bid to bring industrial action to an end. Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has set the RMT union a deadline of midday on Thursday to agree to end strikes. It said conductors would also be asked to sign up to new on-board roles as part of an eight-point offer. The RMT said: ^Jobs, safety and access on Southern rail services are not for sale for £2,000.^
2018Rail line closure could cost Aberdeenshire Council £3m a day [BBC News]The possible emergency closure of the East Coast Main Line due to a deteriorating bridge could cost Aberdeenshire Council up to £3m a day to cover disruption. The Abbeyton road-over-rail bridge, on the B966 just north of Fordoun, was shut in July. Inspections found serious failings in the 170-year-old structure. It is now to be demolished, but the local authority said an emergency closure could cost £1m to £3m a day. [The bridge is two miles north of Fordoun.]
2019Caledonian Sleeper considers seven-day running [RAIL]More routes and seven-day-a-week running could feature for Caledonian Sleeper in the future.
