Craiglockhart: EE Type 4 No. 258 accelerates through the disused platforms at Craiglockhart station in March 1970, doubtless heading for Millerhill depot. The position of the points at Craiglockhart Junction is not entirely clear, but it looks as if the loco has come down the chord from Slateford.

Sudbury [2nd]: A DMU on layover at Sudbury before returning to Colchester in March 1978. Sudbury became the terminus when the line west through Haverhill to Cambridge was closed in March 1967. Survival of the through route was not helped by BR timetablers in the 1960s, who treated the small market town of Sudbury as a service terminus for trains to the east and west. Peak hours apart, if you wanted to travel through Sudbury, you were often faced with a long wait there for a connection.

Bures: The Marks Tey to Sudbury line has done very well to survive for over 40 years since closure of the Sudbury-Cambridge section in March 1967. Shown here in April 1978 is the station at Bures with a Cravens/Gloucester hybrid DMU about to depart for Sudbury. To guarantee survival, the branch really needs a London facing junction at Marks Tey instead of the present one that faces Colchester. If built, electrification and through London services would surely follow.

Preston Maudlands: Is this the shortest lived station in BR history to be used by a scheduled service? Preston Maudlands was located between Blackpool and Preston and, according to the RVJ Butt directory, opened on 9 March 1991 and closed on 11 March 1991... with a note stating Temporary station during bridge rebuilding. The station, with a shuttle-bus waiting outside, is seen here looking east towards Preston on 11 March 1991, the last day of passenger services!

Bathgate Yard: Memories of Rennies Bridge. The bridge stood just east of Bathgate station, overlooking the STVA car terminal ([[18357]]). It linked Edinburgh Road with the south side of the line ([[77175]]). (Even from old maps its hard to see a specific purpose; latterly it ran out in a wooded area to the east of Bathgate golf course.) While I visited it on many occasions over the years, I only ever saw it used by dog walkers and the odd railway photographer (no offence Jim). The side walls and parapets on the bridge and its lengthy approaches incorporated a fascinating range of materials including stonework, wire mesh, shrubbery, wooden fencing, concrete blocks, plate girders, nettles, brickwork, metal slats etc ... etc. The structure was sadly demolished in May 2008 during electrification of the Airdrie - Bathgate - Edinburgh route. Hotwells: Scaffolding surrounding an old railway tunnel in Bristol on the former branch from Sneyd Park Junction to Hotwells terminus located near the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The line was closed in 1922 and lifted shortly thereafter with the tunnel being put to other uses, not least as an air raid shelter during World War 2. The tunnel is now partially collapsed causing concerns regarding the stability of the cliff face and work is seen here in progress on 11 March in an effort to remedy the problem.

Foxfield: A Carlisle to Barrow Class 153 railcar attached to a Class 142 calls at Foxfield on 11 March 2016. Access to the island platform is via a board crossing at the north end of the station. The water tank on the left looks complete but I don't know if it still has a use.

Silecroft: Cumbrian Coast units pass at Silecroft on 11th March 2016. I had arrived on the southbound Class 153 on the right with the intention of crossing over to catch the Class 156 heading north. Unfortunately the southbound train was a few minutes late and there isn't a footbridge so the only way to get between the two platforms is via the level crossing and of course it remained 'closed' to allow the passage of the two trains.

Kirkby-in-Furness: With the Duddon estuary over the platform wall to the right, a Barrow to Carlisle service arrives at Kirkby-in-Furness on 11 March 2016. After departing the train travelled in a long left hand sweep around the estuary eventually arriving at Green Road some 4 Kms away as the crow flies but over 6 1/2 Kms away by train with Foxfield station in between.

Silkstone Common: Compared to the railway, the road passing Silkstone Common station is on a downward gradient towards Dodworth. At the Penistone end of the platform there is level access from both road and car park sides of the line. See image [[54605]]. However, by the middle of the platform there is need for a lengthy flight of steps to reach platform level from the road; although conveniently there is a bus shelter at the bottom, and a platform shelter at the top, of the steps.

Silkstone Common: Looking north from the boarded foot crossing along the wooden platform at the current Silkstone Common station sited between Barnsley and Penistone. This is the third station on the site, and was opened on 14 May 1983 when Huddersfield to Sheffield services were diverted away from the Deepcar route to run via Barnsley. This re-opening came 24 years after closure of the previous station in 1959. The small station car park is to left of view and a step free entrance path comes in on the right. However to give access onto the platform mid way, by the waiting shelter, a lengthy flight of steps is needed See image [[54809]].

Towcester: Beeching's conundrum: looking North at the A43, a dual carriageway which at this point runs parallel to the trackbed of the S&MJ, at 3.40 on a Friday afternoon, there is a slow moving queue of HGV's and coaches. Should the railway have been retained? Only if this traffic was available in the mid-1960's, when industry and retail were much less concentrated in regional clusters - and people owned a lot less cars - and commuted over much shorter distances. see image [[27554]] for further debate and conjecture.

Manchester Piccadilly: A bright morning at Manchester Piccadilly shows a Class 142 Pacer having just arrived from New Mills Central ready for a quick turnaround to work a service to Rose Hill Marple. In nearby platforms a Class 323 will shortly work a stopping train to Crewe and the Voyager will start its journey to Bristol Temple Meads. Departing 3 minutes later and running on the Up Fast the Bristol train should pass the Class 323 as it makes its second stop at Heaton Chapel.

Gunnislake: Having reversed at Bere Alston, 150124 has just arrived from Plymouth at Gunnislake, Cornwall, at the end of the truncated Callington branch, with one of my friends and travelling companion, another David, on the left, on 11th March 2017. This was originally an intermediate station but became a terminus when the section onto Callington was closed in 1966. For another 28 years, trains continued to terminate at the original Gunnislake station, serving just one side of its former island platform. This closed on 30th January 1994 to allow nearby road improvements and was replaced by the present single platform about 100 yards closer to Plymouth. The old station was demolished along with a nearby road bridge.

The viaduct was constructed between 1904 and 1907, is 800 ft. long and 120 ft. high and consists of 12 arches with a 60 ft. span. It is the largest viaduct in Britain constructed entirely of concrete blocks.

Bere Ferrers: Bere Ferrers was originally an intermediate station on the LSWR main line between Plymouth and Okehampton but is now served by the Gunnislake branch services on the surviving southern stump of the line. The building is no longer in use for passengers but is well preserved in private occupation and the replica BR Southern Region green totem sign gives the station added credence. It is seen here from a Gunnislake bound train on 11th March 2017.

Slateford: The hourly Shotts line stopping service for Waverley calls at Slateford for on 11/03/2017. It picked up not a bad crowd, perhaps people avoiding the packed buses on a match day at Tynecastle. New CIS screens still under wraps. Slateford is the last station on the line to be equipped, if you ignore Breich. With one train a day, Breich can arguably do without!

Purchased from Sealink by a company connected to the Waverley operation and operated by Waverley Excursions she was brought to Glasgow on the 21st of November 1980, refurbished and renamed for April 1981. 1981 was her only season, for on 3rd August while under the command of a relief master, she grounded in Port Eynon Bay in the Bristol Channel and became a total loss. All passengers were safely evacuated. By a year later she was a pile of unrecognisable scrap steel.

Garstang and Catterall: These two bridges, one partially filled in and one rebuilt in the early 1970s for electrification, mark the point where the Garstang and Knott End branch veered away from the main line to run west towards Garstang Town. It wasn't a junction as the two railways just ran in parallel from Garstang & Catterall station. Later (LMS days?) a connection from the G&KER line was made back into the main line at this point to form a long Down Goods loop. 11th March 2019.

Pinkhill: Even the most unobservant passer-by must recognise this as a former station. 'Alight here for Zoological Park' said the sign here at Pinkhill. With a junction at Balgreen, Edinburgh Trams might serve it yet, I wouldn't hold your breath though, particularly as reinstating the line to Corstorphine would require many houses being demolished.

2012Pyjama Parties boost Fife^s Sleeper services [Railscot]A high-profile campaign in Fife to raise awareness of the region’s direct rail links to London was launched by ScotRail on 9 March. Staff – dressed in pyjamas, sleeping gowns and night caps – greeted morning commuters at Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing stations. They then took to the streets of both towns to distribute hundreds of leaflets about the benefits of the Caledonian Sleeper service. Willie Cowan, 56, ScotRail station staff member at Inverkeithing, said: “It was great fun dressing up and we got a fantastic reaction from people here. “Many were surprised to hear they could catch the Caledonian Sleeper in Fife, rather than from Glasgow or Edinburgh.” New posters will be put up at Leuchars, Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing stations as a further reminder that Fife is just one night’s sleep away from central London. The ScotRail campaign follows feedback suggesting many customers are unaware they can board the Caledonian Sleeper from more than 40 locations across Scotland.
2013China to dismantle its entire railway minstry [Telegraph]If Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin reckoned shaking up the department’s shambolic procurement system was a headache, he should spare a thought for the Chinese. 2018Clapped-out train causes double breakdowns on Inverclyde line [Greenock Telegraph]A CLAPPED-out old train was responsible for two breakdowns on the Inverclyde rail line in the space of three days. One of the 1970s Class 314 models suffered a power failure on Monday afternoon at Bishopton and again on Wednesday evening at Woodhall, causing delays and cancellations to services. Operators ScotRail have confirmed that it was the same train involved on both occasions and a recurrence of the same fault. The old rolling stock has been heavily criticised by local passengers for not being up to scratch, especially for having no toilets, wireless internet and a lack of comfortable heating.
2019Union threatens carnage for Scotrail passengers [Scotsman] Scotlands biggest rail union has threatened a repeat of the carnage inflicted on ScotRail last year if it is not offered the same new deal for working on days off as train drivers.
