Damens Loop: Morning services crossing at Damens loop in the Worth Valley. The railbus is returning to Oxenhope after two shoppers' trips to Keighley and is waiting for the first steam train of the day to clear the southern section of the branch. Midland 4Fs were not huge engines but 43924 dwarfed the little railbus, seen here from the footplate as single line tokens were exchanged.

Haworth: Early morning steam raising in the KWVR yard at Haworth sees Midland 4F 0-6-0 43924 over the inspection/ash pit on 7 January 2012. It sports an 82E Bristol Barrow Road shed plate, where it spent several years, but its final shed was Gloucester. This led to it ending up in Woodham's scrap yard at Barry and its main claim to fame is that it was the first locomotive to be rescued from there, over forty years ago. It has been a regular performer on the KWVR over many years and returned to service again in 2011 after another overhaul. See image [[32012]] Picture by kind permission of KWVR staff.

Padiham: Another missed opportunity. This is the foot of the 1:40 bank from Padiham to Rose Grove and after the last train to Padiham Power Station ran in 1993 the rails were left in place for a further 17 years. That should have been enough time for me to visit but I left it too long and now its a cycleway. In days of steam the banking of trains up this fearsome gradient was a well known spectacle for the residents of the town, vividly described in Stuart Taylor's Foxline series Journeys by Excursion Train from East Lancashire.

Haworth: Morning shed scene at Haworth. As railbus M79964 trundles past on the first train of the day for Keighley locos are being prepared in the yard. Sole surviving Hudswell Clark 0-6-0DM D2511 is just about to leave with a works train while 4F 0-6-0 43924 is raising steam for later passenger duties.

Oakworth: Unchanged since Jenny Agutter's tearjerker scene in The Railway Children Oakworth is a period gem and lovingly maintained by KWVR members. Seen here from an approaching Oxenhope bound train the station has become so familiar over the years that you half expect it to be Bernard Cribbins opening the gates.

Haworth: Railbus M79964, which has been used by the KWVR for much longer than it was by BR, drops down towards Haworth with a Saturday morning shoppers' service from Oxenhope to Keighley on 7th January 2012. The line on the left is the entrance to Haworth yard where the depot and workshop is situated. In June 2020 the Worth Valley took delivery of Pacer 144011, which will no doubt also be used on these services.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway
Mark Bartlett 2012

Keighley: A new angle on Keighley station. 43924 has just brought the first train of the day down from Oxenhope and has left the coaches in the platform to run round. This is the view back towards the station. The tracks on the left are the electrified Leeds to Skipton lines, with an EMU just visible on the eastbound platform. The KWVR main line connection is some distance behind the locomotive.

Oxenhope: A different view of Oxenhope station, and the KWVR carriage sheds, from the footplate of 4F 0-6-0 43924 which was running round the stock in the station platform. The single line token in the fireman's hand is also the key for the points and D2511, which can be seen lurking alongside the shed, is locked in to the yard until that token is surrendered, in this case at Damens loop signalbox.

Ingrow West: Drivers eye view from Midland 4F 43924 at Ingrow West station heading for Oxenhope. Although Ingrow Tunnel is only 150 yards long it is on a bend and so the exit cannot be seen from the entrance. The adjacent Ingrow East station, on the long gone GNR line from Keighley to Queensbury, has been swept away but the old embankment can be seen from the Worth Valley trains that run parralel to it.

Haworth: Evening shed scene at Haworth. With services finished for the day most locomotives are back under cover. This view shows BR 4MT 80002, L&YR 0-6-0 957, LMS 2MT 41241 and Railbus M79964 with many other locos also present in the shed. The space in the foreground should have housed Class 25 25059 but this had just been turned out to recover a failed diesel shunter from Ingrow West. Picture taken with kind permission of KWVR staff.

Haworth: A few rounds of Ayrshire (Killoch) coal are expertly placed in the firebox of Midland 4F 43924 by KWVR Fireman Ross Graham. With the loco climbing through the Worth Valley the fire is near white hot. Many of the RHD 0-6-0's controls can be seen including the reverser/cut off handle in the bottom right corner.

Mytholmes Tunnel: Mendips Moment. As former Bristol Barrow Road engine 43924 lifted five coaches towards the short Mytholmes Tunnel it was easy to imagine she was back on the Somerset and Dorset Joint line again. On other KWVR engines this would be a driver's view but the Midland 4F is right hand drive.

Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

Padiham: Padiham station closed to regular passengers services in 1957 but summer excursion trains continued to call here until 1964. The two platforms were situated just beyond the bridge but were swept away many years ago. The goods yard, now awaiting redevelopment, was in the area to the left of the station. The rails from Rose Grove to Padiham Power Station were only lifted recently to create the cycle path shown here in this view looking west towards Great Harwood.

Hythe: A Class 321 EMU slows for the stop at Hythe station on 7th January 2012. It will call after at Colchester Town, reverse and terminate at Colchester. Private housing, a large DIY store and student flats have replaced the industrial sites that used to feature in this view.

Conon Bridge: The almost finished new station at Conon Bridge on 7 January 2013, with 158718 passing the one coach length platform on its way to Kyle of Lochalsh. Utilitarian is probably the kindest description of the new station, which is due to open to the public on the 7th February 2013, by which time it will have a standard waiting shelter and a small car park.

Morecambe Harbour: The old Morecambe Harbour station still stands on the Stone Jetty. 2015Obituary: Allan Garraway MBE, railway preservationist, manager and engineer [Scotsman]Born: 14 June, 1926, in Cambridge. Died: Overnight 29/30 December, 2014, in Newtonmore, aged 88. Allan Garraway was one of the giants of railway preservation, an expert who was not merely a railway enthusiast but an enthusiastic railwayman, a subtle but a vital distinction. Internationally renowned in his field, he ran the world’s oldest operational railway company, an enterprise that would not exist today but for his contribution and tenacity. For almost 30 years he managed the historic Ffestiniog Railway Company in Wales, which he had been determined to reinvent, and in retirement was a director of the spectacular Strathspey Railway in the Highlands, an area he had known as a schoolboy. 2016Call to restore Edinburgh train link [Carluke Gazette]The major tourism boost the recently restored rail links to Edinburgh has brought the Borders has sparked off renewed demands for direct trains between Lanark and the capital. These services - up to eight a day at one time - last ran in the mid-Sixties before being axed on economic grounds. Now a new campaign has been launched to persuade the Scottish Government, ScotRail and Network Rail that, in 2016, it would be well worth restoring the 35 mile direct link - and it could all be done at a small fraction of the £294m the Borders project cost.
