Restoration work gets back underway on Whitley Bay Metro station [Tyne and Wear Metro]

Work has resumed on a 5.3m project to restore the historic canopy at Whitley Bay Metro station in North Tyneside. The Grade II listed structure, which dates back to the Edwardian era, is undergoing a major programme of restoration work which will see the glazing replaced and the steel work refurbished. Kier Group, a leading UK construction, infrastructure services and property group, is carrying out the work on behalf of Metro operator Nexus.

Exterior of Whitley Bay station, now part of Tyne & Wear Metro, on 13th June 2018. The original station opened as Whitley on 3rd July 1882 and was renamed Whitley Bay on 1st July 1899, then resited to its present location on 9th October 1910. On 10th September 1979 it was temporarily closed for conversion into the Tyne & Wear Metro and reopened as such on 11th August 1980.

The triptych mosaic Passing by Ian Patience, located in the main entrance hall at Whitley Bay station and seen here in the summer of 2004. The mosaic panels have replaced ticket windows within the arches, with the former booking office beyond now occupied by 'Coffee Central'.
