The £5m restoration of Whitley Bay Metro station has been thrown into doubt, with the construction firm behind the works on the brink of collapse.

Exterior of Whitley Bay station, now part of Tyne & Wear Metro, on 13th June 2018. The original station opened as Whitley on 3rd July 1882 and was renamed Whitley Bay on 1st July 1899, then resited to its present location on 9th October 1910. On 10th September 1979 it was temporarily closed for conversion into the Tyne & Wear Metro and reopened as such on 11th August 1980.

On 26 March 2019 a South Shields (therefore anti-clockwise) service calls at Whitley Bay on the coast loop. Accessible seaside for Geordies, but it's a bit chilly for that today.
