Emergency engineering works are now under way on the West Coast Mainline near Carstairs, between Carlisle and Glasgow, to repair flood damage. An embankment beneath the railway was significantly damaged during extreme weather on Friday, December 30, and it will require extensive work to stabilise and repair the foundations of the tracks to allow the railway to safely reopen. Emergency engineering works to fix flood-damage to the West Coast Mainline near Carstairs have now been completed. The line will reopen for passenger trains on Friday, January 6, but customers are being urged only to travel if their journey is essential as services on the line will be severely limited by ongoing RMT strike action.
