Emergency engineering works are now under way on the West Coast Mainline near Carstairs, between Carlisle and Glasgow, to repair flood damage. An embankment beneath the railway was significantly damaged during extreme weather on Friday, December 30, and it will require extensive work to stabilise and repair the foundations of the tracks to allow the railway to safely reopen. [The location is between Thankerton and Leggatfoot. -RS]
