£80m Rawtenstall - Manchester rail link proposal submitted to government [Railway Gazette]

Rossendale Council has submitted proposals to the Department for Transport outlining a business case for development of a passenger service between Rawtenstall and Manchester which would run over the existing heritage East Lancashire Railway.

Although the Pressed Steel Class 117 suburban DMUs did not operate in the North West the ELR set looks quite at home in Rawtenstall prior to working to Heywood on 3rd August 2016. Rawtenstall was a through station but the new terminus building sits across the trackbed of the line to Bacup, closed in 1966.

GCR based 8F 2-8-0 48624 draws into Rawtenstall on 25th March 2017. The loco had been part of the Lostock Hall themed steam gala earlier in the month (along with 76084, 45212 and 45407) and covered some additional turns.
