Network Rail engineers will work around-the-clock over the next two weekends to upgrade a vital junction at the heart of Scotlands rail network. Whifflet South junction, located between Coatbridge Freight Terminal, and Mossend/Eurocentral near Motherwell on the West Coast Mainline, will be upgraded for the first time since its installation over 50 years ago. Due to the complexity of the project, the railway between Coatbridge and Motherwell will be closed over two weekends, Saturday 20 to Sunday 21 and Saturday 27 to Sunday 28 August.

Services terminating at Whifflet have to clear the through line by first running forward then retreating into the Sunnyside Goods line, which is alongside and almost parallel with Whifflet station, before returning to Glasgow.  This means three changes of ends per visit, as with Cowdenbeath.  On 17 June 156 512 emerges back on to the Up Coatbridge line where it will cross over to the Down line, then reverse for the third and final time for the return to Glasgow.
