Hitachi Rail, Angel Trains and TPE have agreed in principle to retrofit intercity battery hybrid trains in order to carry out a trial of this clean technology on the Transpennine route in 2022.

Possibly because of the proposed changes to the Newcastle to Edinburgh route in May 2022, TPE Class 802 Hybrids worked a Craigentinny - Preston - Glasgow - Preston - Craigentinny test/training diagram from 16th to 19th August 2021 (Cancelled on 20th). 802218, one of several used, is seen at Woodacre on the leg from Glasgow on the Tuesday working. This routed through the platform lines at Lancaster without stopping. The train was diagrammed as a DMU despite the routes being entirely electrified.

A TransPennine Express Hitachi 5-coach Bi-Mode Class 802 unit runs north along the down fast line, on diesel power, just after passing the former Raskelf station location, to rear of view, whilst working the Sunday 18 April 2021 12.45 Manchester Victoria to Newcastle service. As I have seen a number of these TPE units running on diesel under the wires, either this is down to drivers not changing over from diesel to electric mode, or there is a power capacity issue as on the ECML coastal section in Scotland.
