New walking and cycling route delayed because council too busy on Spaces for People [Edinburgh News]

Date: 09/06/2021

Plans to turn an old rail route into a green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists have been held up because the council is too busy on the Spaces for People programme. [Railscot note: use of the trackbed between Easter Road, Meadowbank and Piershill would block railway use of the route, various uses of which have included provision of extra capacity or sidings.]

If I hadn't photographed it myself a fortnight previously I might not have believed that the rails here had been lifted in order to dig a hole. The hole is now filled in and the rails replaced. This would be unremarkable, but the line is disused… View looks south towards Leith Walk. The engine release loop is nearest the camera.

Main entrance to Powderhall depot from Broughton Road, looking north on a bright and sunny 22 June 2019. Demolition work and decontamination of the site, previously used for refuse processing, incineration and containerised disposal of compacted waste by rail, is now almost complete. (The sign beyond the gate on the right still reads Powderhall Waste Transfer Station). Note the original 1893 building, once known as The Destructor (part of which can be seen on the right) is to be retained and converted for use as 'flexible workspace and community space'.
