Anticipating the future is hard, especially over centuries. So we shouldn^t be too harsh with the North British Railway (NBR) for building the East Coast Main Line (ECML) in the wrong place. It serves only two of our towns, requiring four branch lines to serve the rest, badly.

Looking north across Station Road, Haddington towards the station site on Boxing Day 2019. The covered access stairway to the high level platform was located beyond the shrubbery on the left, while the former carriage entrance opposite gives access to what is now Haddington Station Gardens. Note the railway-themed ornamental metalwork incorporated within the fencing along the front of the gardens. Haddington station closed to passengers in December 1949, with complete closure of the branch from Longniddry taking place in 1968.

The timber loading bank at Humbie still exists despite the closure of the line in 1960. The line east from here to the terminus at Gifford was closed from 1948 following collapse of the Gilchriston Bridge. The bridge was immediately east of Humbie station. The line to Smeaton and Edinburgh ran off to the right.
