Patrick McLoughlin: paper tickets will be phased out by 2020 [Telegraph]

Date: 09/03/2015

Paper tickets for travel on the railroad will be phased out by 2020 with passengers paying instead by their mobile phones or smart card. Patrick McLoughlin, the Transport Secretary, said the move away from printed tickets was necessary to make trains more accessible and allow passengers greater flexibility. Rail travellers in London are already able to use their “Oyster Card” to purchase season tickets and pay-as-they-go on the capital’s rail, Underground and bus network. [From Mark Bartlett]

I would rate this sign on Kendal station as somewhere between off-putting and significantly threatening. However, I certainly agree that people should pay for their tickets.

It was not unknown for ticket machines to run out of years, as here, but I know this was issued on 31 August 1985.  ScotRail took the opportunity during a steam special to Ayr to run it's own specials, a DMU to Ardrossan Harbour direct, ie via Byrehill and Dubbs Junctions.  £1 return was reasonable even then.
