North Yorkshire Moors Railway's new platform opens [BBC News]

North Yorkshire Moors Railway's second platform at Whitby station has officially opened to the public. The charity launched its new timetable with the first steam train arriving into the station at 09:44 BST. The railway operates steam trains on its line between Pickering, Grosmont and Whitby. It said the number of steam trains serving the seaside town would increase from three to five each day during the spring, summer and autumn months.

Looking west from the Langborne Road entrance across the car park at Whitby on 2 October 2008. The station (Whitby's second), dates from 1847 and the name has alternated several times between Whitby Town and plain Whitby. The arched portico over the main entrance carries the logo of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, whose staff now handle ticket sales for Northern Rail Esk Valley Line services to Middlesbrough as well as their own trains to Pickering.

BR Class 4MT 4-6-0 no 75029 'The Green Knight', built at Swindon Works in 1954 and purchased by artist and steam enthusiast David Shepherd following its withdrawal by BR in 1967. Now owned by the NYMR the locomotive is seen here at Whitby on 1 September 2013, awaiting its departure time with a train for Grosmont. Definitely looking much better than it did for much of 2010...
