Communities along the route of the Borders to Edinburgh railway line are being urged to contribute ideas of how to mark its reopening next year. Training engines are expected to start running in June 2015 with passengers services 12 weeks later.[From Richard Buckby]

Royal Scot 4-6-0 no 46115 Scots Guardsman photographed at the platform at Galashiels with a southbound train. The date is thought to be 17 July 1965 and the train is the 9.50am (SO) Edinburgh Waverley - Sheffield Midland, a relief to the up Waverley on summer Saturdays. On 4 January 1969 the Border Railway Scociety arranged for a final day 'Farewell to the Waverley' headboard to be carried by a number of passenger services between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The headboard is seen here attached to D5311 approaching Cowbraehill bridge south of Tynehead on the climb to Falahill Summit with the 3pm Edinburgh - Carlisle train on that day.

D8529 stands on the Waverley Line with a coal train alongside Lady Victoria Colliery, c. late 60s/early 70s. The pit officially closed in December 1971, with the last of the Claytons also withdrawn at that time. The remaining section of the Waverley route back to Millerhill finally closed in mid 1972.
