Meet David Hindle who wil be signing copies of his latest book. David’s new book, Victorian Preston and the Whittingham Hospital Railway, known as the ‘nurses special’, explores not only the old Victorian Preston of Dickens ‘Hard Times’ but connects it with the private railway that serviced the new Whittingham asylum.

An ex LYR and an ex North London coach gently decay in a siding next to the running line at Whittingham Hospital. They were replaced around 1946 by three converted ex LNWR brake vans and mouldered in this siding for many years. They can be seen in the background in image 35480. [See image 35617] for the same location in 2011.

Before Grimsargh's station [See image 24597] was built tickets for trains were sold from the Plough Inn, which stood by the level crossing. The footpath seen here follows the line of the old railway towards Longridge and, while the main station was behind the camera, the bungalows have been built over the platform that was used by the Whittingham Hospital trains. The old hospital railway engine shed at Whittingham, which hasn't seen a locomotive for over fifty years but remains in use as an NHS workshop. [See image 35694] for a picture of the shed when in use in the 1950s.
