IT WAS a sad day 25 years ago as the railway works hooter sounded for the last time and 1,100 people walked through the gates of the railway works, bringing nearly 150 years of proud engineering tradition to an end.

Warship D818 Glory at her birthplace in Swindon Works on 6 June 1981. Despite her immaculate appearance (following a restoration exercise by works apprentices) she was subsequently scrapped.

North British Class 22 D6330, with nose doors open, stands at the head of a line of sister NBL locos at Swindon. A handful of the class had just made it into 1972 but all the survivors had been withdrawn by the time this picture was taken and D6330 was cut up three months later in June 1972. [See image 19448] for a picture of D6319, the last survivor just before it was also cut up.
