Opencast mines set for go-ahead [BBC News]

Controversial plans for three new opencast mines could be given the go-ahead by South Lanarkshire Council.

[Comment] This may ensure the future of the Ravenstruther coal loading facility but will wipe out the remains of old railways in the Poneil area. A large part of the old Spireslack Branch has been opencast already and the trackbed to the north of Douglas used as a roadway.
