Description

This schoolhouse, dating from 1856, became a cottage hospital during the construction of the Mallaig Extension (West Highland Railway). Today it is a house.

Amongst those treated here from the injuries the most famous is Thomas Malcolm McAlpine, son of Robert McAlipine, who was seriously injured after being struck by debris from rock blasting. His survival was uncertain and speaks of the quality of his treatment and the efforts undertaken to evacuate him south for further surgery,
