Levenford Works (1855-1930)

Description

This was the marine and other engines works of Matthew Paul, Matthew Paul & Co, from 1898 Matthew Paul and Company Limited. It was on the west bank of the River Leven just south of the old Dumbarton Bridge (between the bridge and the works was the Westbridge End Shipyard, the site of which was subsumed into the engine works). Opposite, on the east bank, was the Albert Ship Building Yard.

The slim site was constrained by the bridge to the north, Woodyard Road to the west, river to the east. The site was not rail served. There was a crane located in a small yard at the southern portion of the works.

The location is now a car park. The retaining wall on the bank of the river remains, along with double steps which ran from the works down to the water.
