Name and dates

Kingshill Colliery Pit No 3 (1951-1974)

Served by the Kingshill Collieries Railway.

Description

This colliery was an expansion to the south east of Kingshill Colliery Pit No 1 opened by the National Coal Board to address a shortage of coking coal.

The colliery was connected by a double track narrow gauge cable operated railway to no 1 where the washery was located. This line crossed over the Wilsontown, Morningside and Coltness Railway. Coal from Kingshill Colliery was increasingly taken to no 3 to be brought to the surface.

No 1 closed in 1968 but the washery remained open until 1974 for no 3.

The route of the narrow gauge line is still apparent, with lengths of the cable still in place. Much of the embankment has been removed leading the concrete bridges over minor roads in place, looking rather peculiar. The bridge over the railway still exists. Some portions of surface buildings, now just ruins, remain at the colliery site.

Kingshill Mineral Water is now based at the site.
