Fort William Headshunt

Place

Name and dates

Fort William Headshunt (1894-1975)

Opened on the West Highland Railway.

Description

The West Highland Railway terminated alongside the southern of the two town piers in Fort William, the line running south west from the station alongside Loch Linnhe to reach the pier where there was a loop.

Having a separate location for the headshunt probably seems excessive, this is just to indicate that the original end of the headshunt was quite some way south of the station. It was later cut back to closer to the station.

The line is now the A82 dual carriageway and the pier is a little to the south of Fort William Pier.
