Name and dates

Cymmer Viaduct (1878-1970)

Opened on the Llynvi Valley Extension (Llynvi and Ogmore Railway).

Description

This is a disused single track viaduct crossing the Afan. Owned by the Llynvi Valley Extension (Llynvi and Ogmore Railway) it linked that line, north of Cymmer Tunnel to the South Wales Mineral Railway. In addition to the Afan the viaduct also crossed the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway at the south end.

The connection allowed a passengers service to be initiated on the northern portion of the South Wales Mineral Railway, the line was freight only to the west of Cymmer.

There was a connection to the Glyncymmer Colliery at the south end of the viaduct.

The viaduct survives, the piers and girders but the decking has been removed.
