Tunnel

Name and dates

Craigag No 62 Tunnel (1901-)

Opened on the Mallaig Extension (West Highland Railway).

Description

This is a single track tunnel east of the Glenfinnan Viaduct. It is 23 yards long.

Craigag Lodge, once owned by the Earl of Morton, was nearby.

It was here, on the 12th of February 1898 during the line's construction, that there was an accidental explosion of dynamite which resulted in the immediate death of two men engaged in drilling and injured several others. It was the third such accident in a short period of time.

To the east Craigag Cragie Bridge crosses the A830. It is an original concrete bridge which reduces the width of the roadway to a single lane.
