![The plaque on the wall of the former station building at Chapel-en-le-Frith commemorating John Axon GC and John Creamer. [Railscot note: On 9 February 1957, driver Axon's freight train was returning from Buxton in the Derbyshire Peak District to his home depot at Edgeley, Stockport, when the steam brake pipe fractured. Despite exposure to scalding steam, he urged his fireman to jump to safety and hung on the outside of the cab as the train picked up speed, reaching 80mph down a long incline. His shouted warning to the signalman at Doveholes enabled a DMU at Chapel-en-le-Frith to be moved to safety but his own life was lost as his engine crashed into the rear of a freight train there. John Creamer, the guard on the second train, also died in the crash. John Axon was posthumously awarded the George Cross.]<br>

![Looking north through the site of Chapel-en-le-Frith (Midland) station on 21 March 2010. The platforms have gone but the main station building on the up side remains and is now in use as Chapel DIY. On the down side a coal yard now goes right up to the trackside. The post with a camera to the left of the down line is presumably for the signaller at Chinley Junction to confirm that there is a tail-light on the rear vehicle for any train heading east and not passing the signalbox.<br><br>[John McIntyre 21/03/2010]](/images/28000/28407.jpg "Chapel-en-le-Frith")
![The old Midland Railway station building on the up side at Chapel-en-le-Frith has received a few modifications over the years since closure and is now used by Chapel DIY. At least it survives, which is more than can be said for the buildings on the down side. Trains still pass the station but they are now the heavy freights bringing stone from the quarries at Peak Forest. <br><br>[John McIntyre 21/03/2010]](/images/28000/28416.jpg "Chapel-en-le-Frith")
