This was the junction for coal pits to the west of Birnieknowe Farm on a short branch going north from the Muirkirk line, approached from the east. To the south was a line to Blackston Colliery, also approached from the east.

After closure of the early branches a new mineral line, on the south side and approached from the west, served Dykes Pit No 2. A box 'Blackstone' opened in 1883, it was in the 'V' of the junction, a little to the east. The box was closed by around 1900.
