Bletchley Flyover: New platforms are taking shape on the refurbished Bletchley Flyover, seen here from the steps to Bletchley's Platform 6 on 25th July 2022. This is part of the ongoing work to reinstate services from Oxford, which will initially run from there to Milton Keynes. In the longer term, as part of the East West Rail project, it is hoped to reach Bedford and eventually Cambridge although the latter aim is proving challenging (See recent news item).
Leyland: Less than a minute before the PA had announced that the next train at platform 4 would be the Northern service to Manchester Airport, a Swift Express Freight Class 321 EMU conversion appeared from under the road bridge with the driver sounding his horn to warn passengers who had strayed too close to the platform edge. The converted unit is 321334 and carries reference to Eversholt (the leasing company) and Wabtec who carried out the conversion. The unit had travelled north to Mossend the day before from Tilbury and Euston and this was the southbound run to Doncaster via Wembley.
Monkwearmouth: 142016 passes the closed Monkwearmouth station, heading south, in 1994. In the background is Wearmouth Junction.
Millport Pier: Lunchtime at Millport Old Pier, with DEPV 'Talisman' on an hour off before her Sunday afternoon cruise to Tighnabruaich. Meantime MV 'Countess of Breadalbane' has tied up inside the pier after arriving with the ferry service from Largs, though she only gets forty minutes before return. The funnel and wheelhouse of Millport's regular puffer 'Saxon' can be seen to the right.
Broadley: Although Broadley closed to passengers in 1947, and completely in 1952, the platform is almost completely intact. Much of the old Bacup to Rochdale branch is now a public trail, which opened in 1972 just five years after the last Whitworth goods train left. This view looks down the 1:60 gradient towards Rochdale with the Healey Dell viaduct about 400 yards away.
Gillingham Dorset: 159020 with 159004, during a leg stretch stop at Gillingham (Dorset), with the return UK Railtours' through excursion from Kingswear back to London Waterloo, having reversed at Exeter St. Davids, on the evening of Saturday, 28th June 2014. The train will head away from the camera when it departs.
Abingdon: It is over 40 years since the MG car factory at Abingdon closed. This railway branch line - seen approaching Crabtree Place near the station site, which is now a Waitrose supermarket and car park - carried thousands of cars out for export. Now it is a peaceful footpath and cyclepath, for those who prefer its old fashioned charm to the springy tarmac path to the left in this view.
Cutler Tip [2nd]: NCB No.24 propels waste side-tippers on to the Cutler Tip, Waterside, in 1975.
Morecambe Promenade: The staircase of the art deco Midland Hotel, opened by the LMS at Morecambe in 1933. It closed in the 1990s and became semi-derelict but was bought by developers Urban Splash and, after a full refurbishment, reopened in 2008. Art-deco features abound inside and outside this wonderful building.
Didcot Railway Centre: Concern has been expressed on enthusiast forums about Brown Boveri Gas Turbine 18000. It is kept outside at Didcot and is starting to look slightly the worse for wear, as seen here on 9th July 2022.
Aviemore Shed: So near ... a frosty scene early in 1975 with track being laid towards Aviemore engine shed but the tenant still in residence.
Euxton Balshaw Lane: The ramp to the Wigan bound platform at Euxton Balshaw Lane provides a really good view point over the fast lines that pass the station. The 'Tesco' is usually hauled by a single 88 electric but on 14th July 2022 it was 68003 and 68007 in charge
Newbigging Siding: Peppercorn Class A1 60163 'Tornado' at the head of 'The Aberdonian' railtour from Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen, just past Inverkeithing and taking the line along the coast through Aberdour and Burntisland, on 14th March 2019.
