Shawforth

A deceptive picture on the old trackbed to the north of the site of Shawforth station. It perhaps appears fairly level in this view but this is a 1:39 gradient and the line is on a substantial stone embankment above the main road houses. One of the reasons the line from Rochdale to Facit was built was to access local stone and the L&YR made plentiful use of it when the branch was extended over the summit to Bacup.
