At the time of this photo the east wall was unrestored. It can be seen that there is a distinct slope from south to north due to the wall being higher at the southern end. This may be due to having to accommodate a height difference after the shed was extended. The original shed was built around 1850 by the Aberdeen Railway Company (ARCo). One of the early engineers based here was John Wilkinson. He was paid about 6s per day not only to drive the locos but probably also to carry out repairs in the shed hence the name. By 1859 he had become the Superintendent of the Locomotive Department of the Scottish North Eastern Railway Company which had been formed by the amalgamation of ARCo and the Scottish Midland Junction Railway Co in 1857.
