Rose Bridge Junction

The substantial stonework around Lock 73 in Wigan indicates this is the point where the Whelley Loop line emerged from the cutting on the right and crossed the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Until 1973, a photo here might have included a Class 50 with a diverted express train. Rose Bridge Junction was a short distance south east of the bridge, with a curve to Kirkless Hall Junction on the freight only Springs Branch. The canal basin had been drained to allow work on Lock 73 and another higher up the flight during the 2023/24 winter period.
