View from the south portal of Ladhope Tunnel in January 2013, with the site of the proposed new Galashiels station just beyond the bend. Following closure of the Waverley Route the tunnel had been narrowed significantly as part of a local road realignment. At this stage preparations were underway to widen the tunnel to accommodate the Borders Railway, with the new white retaining wall having been recently completed.
