Chaffers Siding

Barkerhouse Road in Nelson is busy and steep, and this has long necessitated special arrangements for the level crossing. Until 1991 it was protected by Chaffers Siding signal cabin. When this closed the barriers were operated by train drivers, and then from 2014 by train operated treadles. However, because of the conditions on Barkerhouse Road, the train still has to stop at the crossing and then restart at the driver's discretion. On 22nd November 2023, 156409 paused and then got underway again working from Colne to Preston.
