Ripponden and Barkisland

Opened as plain Ripponden, the nearby village, the station on the Rishworth branch was later renamed Ripponden and Barkisland. This was rather optimistic as the latter is about a mile away, and nearly 400' higher. The line was built as a projected main line linking Sowerby Bridge via a long tunnel to Littleborough but when that did not materialise became a quiet branch line. Passenger services ceased in 1929 but goods services here lasted until 1958. Housing occupies the station and goods yard site but is known as School Close rather than the perhaps expected name. The only trace of the railway is this bridge abutment and its opposite number.
