Colchester Town (St Botolphs)

Class 315 EMUs were built 1980-81 by BREL for use primarily on the inner suburban lines out of Liverpool Street, replacing Class 306 units. In January 1981, unit 315814 was evaluated on the Colchester to Clacton and Walton line and ended up as a failure near St Botolphs station. This photo, taken on 24th January 1981, shows the errant unit languishing in the non-electrified No 2 Top Siding at St Botolphs awaiting retrieval. In the background is the St Botolphs Goods shed which had been in use with National Carriers until abandoned six months earlier. The shed was demolished in April 1981 and the siding lifted at the same time. Scrapping of the 315s began in 2018 and 315814 was an early casualty.
