Summit Tunnel (Littleborough)

Viewed from the towpath by the summit pound of the Rochdale Canal, one of the air shafts of the Summit railway tunnel, high on the hillside and, in May 2023, surrounded by scaffolding. The railway itself runs through the tunnel at a much lower level than the canal, which heading towards Todmorden has to drop through twelve locks before it is able to pass under the line at Gauxholme.
